Gaffer G-109 "Chalcedony" Test - April 2009125 viewsI participated in a bulk buy of this glass and frit earlier this month.
Here are the results of my first couple of plays.
Gaffer G-109 "Chalcedony" Test - April 2009117 viewsOk, the photo is separated into 4 columns: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4.

Day 1: I also used mostly Spectrum 96 clear for the base and added Gaffer Black (G-50) and G-109 Chalcedony on top of that. Results out of the kiln the next day were disappointing, but on further experimentation I figured out that I was using too much heat.
Gaffer G-109 "Chalcedony" Test - April 2009120 viewsDay 2: Working cooler produces better results.

These beads are all on a base of pure Chalcedony. The ones with Chalcedony frit on them were marvered slightly and quickly to shape them. Marvering does produce different colours.

The fish was an experiment to see if longer play time would lose the colour. It doesn't. It is the excess heating that does it.

Gaffer G-109 "Chalcedony" Test - April 2009124 viewsNow, here is what happens when you overheat this glass.

I used gravity to pull the point of this heart meaning more heat at the bottom.

Once you get this far, there is no going back. (But that is not going to stop me from seeing if I can disprove that at a later date...)
Gaffer G-109 "Chalcedony" Test - April 2009152 viewsI LOVE this bead!!!

It turned out the best of all of my test beads.

Pity it is the one I didn't heat through properly thus causing it to lose its end... :-( Oh well, it's nothing that some wire wrapping or a bead cap can't fix... ;-)

chalcedony base with Chalcedony frit, gently marvered.

Having a bit of a play before I attempt some bigger ones.
